What is the main cause of allergic rhinitis?

Having an allergic reaction can be one of the most annoying things that could ever happen. Itchy skin and feeling itchy throat are some of the common signs in people with allergies. In some instances, it could even lead to life-threatening conditions which often initially start off with breathing difficulty. People with allergies often have their medication with them all the time. One of the common medications used to treat this condition is Telfast 180 mg. In this article, we will be learning more about one of the conditions associated with allergy known as allergic rhinitis.

It is estimated that 1 in 5 people is affected by allergic rhinitis. Allergic rhinitis is also known as hay fever. This medical condition is caused by the inflammation of the inside of the nose. Typically, allergic rhinitis is triggered when a person is exposed to the allergen. Allergen are substances that normally do not trigger the body’s immune reaction. In a person with allergic rhinitis, exposure to allergen triggers the allergy reaction. Allergic rhinitis may occur due to changes in seasons such as in spring or perennial which occur all day long but may also be triggered by many allergens such as dust mite and pet fur. A person with other allergies or asthma conditions are more likely to get allergic rhinitis. Having siblings or parents with allergic rhinitis may also make a person prone to developing allergic rhinitis themselves. Thus, the main cause of allergic rhinitis is exposure to allergen which then triggers the excessive immune reaction.

Due to the name itself which is allergic rhinitis, symptoms are similar to allergic reaction in general. This means that symptoms may mimic as if a person has a cold. Symptoms include runny nose, frequent sneezing, red itchy eyes, itchy mouth, skin rash, stuffy nose and fatigues. Other symptoms are headache, earache, loss of smell, pain around the temples and forehead, itchy throat and coughing. A person with any of these symptoms, especially right after an exposure or constant exposure towards possible allergens, should be suspected with allergic rhinitis. Although most of the symptoms can be considered as harmless, these symptoms may cause great disturbance to a person’s life or may not subside even after taking medicine. When allergic rhinitis starts affecting a person’s life or they do have a history of other respiratory conditions such as asthma, they should seek medical advice from a doctor when they are affected by the allergic rhinitis symptoms.

There is no cure for allergic rhinitis. Treatment available helps patient to lessen the severity of the symptoms. Common treatment such as antihistamines and decongestant are available as over-the-counter (OTC) medicine. These medicines are available in form of sprays, tablets and eye drop. Corticosteroid nasal spray is often available with doctor’s prescription. Immunotherapy is another treatment that may be considered but it is usually quite expensive and only be provided in certain cases. Patients should always seek medical advice first especially if any of the symptoms of allergic rhinitis happen for the first time or get worse after using OTC medications. By doing this, patient can receive medications that is better cater for them and help patient to get back on track on their daily routine much faster. Patient may also ask pharmacist on the right way to use the medicine so that patient can get the maximal effect from the medicine.

Apart from medication, there are things that patient can do to minimise the chances of getting allergic rhinitis such as:

1)  The best one is to avoid the triggers that cause the symptoms. It can be difficult to completely avoid potential allergens but taking steps to reduce exposure to the particular allergen the patient already knows or suspect to trigger the allergic rhinitis, can help improve symptoms.

2)  Patients may also want to try regularly rinsing the nasal passages with salt water solution to keep the nose free from irritants.

3)  Keeping the house clean and uncluttered as possible by vacuuming and mopping can help reduce the potential allergen.

4)  Patients might want to invest in HEPA air filters and use dust mite-proof bed sheets.

5)  Always throw away old pillows and bolsters.

6)  Keeping the living space in low humidity and good ventilation.

7)  Spray furniture and bedding with dust-mite sprays,

8)  Cover nose and mouth by using a face mask especially in haze or grassy flowered areas.

It can be concluded that allergic rhinitis is inflammation of the inside of the nose caused by allergies that trigger immune reaction. It is a life-long condition as there is no cure to eradicate the condition. If you are trying to stop allergic rhinitis, medication can be a great help and of course medication works best when it is advised by doctors. Allergic rhinitis may improve by time but it usually takes many years and is unlikely for the condition to be gone forever. It is important to treat allergic rhinitis to avoid complications such as nasal polyps, sinusitis and middle ear infections that can cause severe symptoms in future.
